Running Unibase Under Windows 3.1x. by Bill Baber, DMAC

Many of our users may not be aware that Unibase will run (as a DOS program) under Microsoft Windows 3.1x. The following procedure will help you run Unibase under Windows. "Wininstl" and setupwin.bat programs are available on the BBS to do these steps automaticaly.

I. CHECK SYSTEM SETTINGS

Follow Volume Four, Chapter 2 - PC Installation instructions for installing Unibase by DMAC in the manual set.

Before running Unibase, make sure that the CONFIG.SYS file contains the following lines:

buffers = 40 files = 30 shell = C:COMMAND.COM /P /E:512

If your CONFIG.SYS file already contains a "buffers" or "files" statement, inccrease the values only if they are smaller. Do not change them if they are larger.

CHANGE THE UNIBASE SETUP FILE

Go to the \UNIBASE\BIN directory. Using a text editor, modify the SETUP.BAT file by adding the following line (this must be placed after the last existing line):

CALL MENU

This command will bring up the Unibase by DMAC main menu. If you want to go directly into data entry, type "CALL DE" instead.

At this point, DMAC recommends that you reset all environment variables. This will provide more memory for other applications after you exit Unibase. You will notice that the first several lines of the setup file contains statements such as "set KBEXT=Y". For each of these statements, retype them so that there is nothing following the "=" sign. This will turn off all Unibase environment settings.

CREATE WINDOWS PROGRAM GROUP AND ICON

Start Microsoft Windows 3.1x. Perform the following steps:

A. Create a Windows Program Group

1. Go to the "File" menu and choose "New". 2. Create a new Program Group. Click "OK". 3. Type the Description in the dialog box. This description will appear under the program group icon on your Windows screen. (Unlike DOS, you may use names containing over 8 characters, spaces, and other special characters. In order to conserve space, we recommend keeping names as short as possible.) Click "OK".

A new group window will appear. Do not close this window at this time. B. Create a Program Icon.

1. Go to the "File" menu and choose "new". 2. Choose "Program Item" and click "OK". 3. Type the description (ie. "Unibase") in the dialog box. This will appear under the icon later. 4. Type the command line "SETUP". This will run the setup file edited earlier and is the actual command for running Unibase. 5. Type the working directory (ie. "C:\UNIBASE\BIN"). This is the directory where your setup file is located. 6. Click "Change Icon". A message will appear; click "OK" to choose an icon for Program Manager. 7. Choose an icon from the C:\WINDOWS\PROGMAN.EXE file. To choose an icon, click on it, then click "OK". If you do not like any of these icons, type "C:\WINDOWS\MORICONS.DLL in the file name dialog box and click "OK". Click on the icon of your choice, then click "OK".
